Hello to all the Fabulous Moms (and Dads): I am the mother of a beautiful young lady who has blessed my life for almost 23 years, my daughter Brittany. Brittany was born 6 weeks premature w/SB, hydraucelphalus, scolosis and a club foot. Her spine was closed shortly at one day old and a VP shunt was placed at one week old. I can remember the doctor telling me (over the phone) that my daugher was most likely not going to make it through the night and if she did she would not live a "normal" life as I knew it to be. The doctors told me all the things that my daughter would "not" be able to do, simple things that most of us take for granted from day to day, like wear regular shoes or underwear. The doctors told me that her VP shunt would most likely need several revisions within her first year and most likely need to be replaced as she grew into her teenage years. I'm so thankful to report, that Brittany has more shoes than I do, she's able to wear undies (she loves VS panties by the way) and she has NEVER had any surgeries on her shunt outside of the one when she was a week old! Brittany has had seven surgeries over the course of her life. One of which was 10 hours at the age of 9 years old to place a steel rod in her back to help alleviate the "s" shape curvature of her spine due to the scolosis. During Brittany's early years she wore a back brace to keep the scolosis from getting worse. Ultimately the spinal fusion was needed to provide her with a healthier and longer life. The surgery was a success and Brittany's spine fused together stronger than her othapaedic doctor expected.
Brittany has always used a wheelchair for mobility due to her paralysis. We both had smiles on our faces reading some of the "cathe and poopee" stories because we could remember those days. Brittany learned how to self cathe herself when she was 11 years old (6th grade) but after many frustrating days she finally got it!! )
We have both endured trials and tribulations but most importantly we have had many triumphs through this SB life journey. My faith in the Lord has sustained my daughter's life and mine too.
I would say to each of you, keep the faith, NEVER GIVE UP HOPE and have faith to believe that "all things are possible" (Luke 1:37).
Thank You Nicole and Boris!!! SVF has opened the door for many more SB families which is truly a blessing!!! Our children are MIRACLES!!!
God Bless You All!!! Cerita (aka SBMom)

Hi Cerita and Brittany,
what a blessing to hear about your journey and the success of your work. It's so important to hear stories like yours. It gives the rest of us tremendous hope and motivation to keep fighting every day, and to remain faithful and believing. Sometimes this 'way of life' seems to be a 'life sentence', and people like yourselves make us understand that it's actually a blessing and an opportunity to cherish what's really important in life. You two are true champions, and today you both have given me the conviction to remember that it will be ok.
Thank you.
Boris (aka Daddy B, aka Sophie's Dad) :-)

Hello Boris & Nicole (Happy Mother's Day):
It was truly a special joy for my daughter, Brittany and I to meet Boris in Columbus Ohio on Friday, 5/6/11 (First Fridays event). You know Mom's will do just about anything for their children, no matter how old they get. I would have never imagined I would be at a party with my daughter who is 24.5 y.o. and I'm about to turn 48 y.o. next month, but I was on a mission! To have an opportunity for my Brittany to meet Sophie's Dad live and in living color within 10 minutes from our house was truly a blessing!!! I brought Boris' email that he replied to us from SVF forum dtd 2009 which he graciously signed with a special note to Brittany and we took pics.
Nicole needless to say I'm not saying anything that you don't already know...but your husband is a geniune, sincere, nice human being! I will never forget how Boris took special time with Brittany while others looked on waiting their turn to get pics w/one of the sexiest/finest men in Hollywood! Brittany is still on a natural high and smiling about the experience and can't believe she actually met Boris Kodjoe! Brittany said Boris made her feel so comfortable, like talking to a long time friend...that speaks volumes!
I pray for the Lord to continue to give you all double strength and peace daily. This journey is not easy for parents or our special children. Just know you are important and special in His eyes and no matter what things look like in the natural just know that the Lord is working in the spirit to make the crooked places straight for Sophie, Brittany and all others living w/SB.
We will always stand in the gap through prayer for your family and all families with children who were born with SB. We will always have a special bond that many can't comprehend or understand unless they've lived it.
Continue to fight the good fight of faith...Sophie's best years are just ahead of her and I know as her parents you all will be there each and every step of the way!
God Bless...who knows...we may meet again some day! Cerita (aka SBMom) |
