My name is Tarin (age 24) and my younger sister (age 21) has spina bifida. Having a sister with spina bifida has allowed me to grow in so many unique ways and I find myself being more of an advocate for her every day. I am a recent graduate of James Madison University with a degree in Kinesiology-Sport and Recreation Management, and a Masters graduate from Old Dominion University with a degree in Recreation and Tourism. It is through my educational and work experiences that I am able to raise awareness of spina bifida.

I have attended several national SB conferences with my family as an attendee and participated as a sibling in the Brothers and Sisters program (a portion of the conference dedicated to pre-teens and teens who have siblings with spina bifida). This summer will be my first year as the director of the Brothers and Sisters program (for sibs) and I could not be any more excited. Being a sibling is something that only 'we' can truly understand and being able to come together with other siblings from around the world and relate is incredible! Last year, we had a family attend from South Africa!

For my parents, attending the conferences has given them a sense of belonging to a community of people who share the same experiences being caregivers. Being able to receive information from all conference sessions has also empowered them to be able to take better care of my sister and to 'understand' the more she grows.

Take Care:-)
